How to preserve your family legacy — a practical guide
Every family has that one drawer. The one filled with loose photos, yellowed letters, and documents that have never really been sorted through.
Step 1 — Gather before you sort
Before you try to organize anything, start by gathering everything that exists: photo albums, letters, notebooks, old administrative documents. Don't throw anything away at this stage.
Step 2 — Identify, while there is still time
A photo without a caption loses all its meaning within a generation. For every important photo, note down who is in it, where and when it was taken, and an anecdote if someone remembers one.
Step 3 — Collect stories, not just objects
A photo tells you who, where, and sometimes when. It never tells you why that moment mattered. Some concrete ways to do this: a simple audio recording, written notes taken right after a chat, or regular conversations rather than one big, formal interview.
Step 4 — Choose a format that lasts and can be shared
A printed book, a shared digital space, or a visual timeline.
What makes this process difficult in practice
Two obstacles almost always come up: time, and the awkwardness of asking personal questions. This is exactly what we aimed to solve with 4Them.Life.
